What is Tracks?
Tracks is a wildlife field guide that works from where you’re standing. Scan the area around you and it shows the species documented nearby: birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish. Each one comes with a real photo and scientific name, drawn from iNaturalist’s research-grade observations. Collect what you find to build your own guide.
Why does it need my location?
Scanning looks up the wildlife documented around your current position. Without it there’s nothing to scan. Location is only used while you’re actively using the app, never in the background, and you can revoke the permission anytime in your device settings. Our Privacy Policy sets out exactly what is and isn’t collected.
Where does the wildlife data come from?
Observations, photos, and species data come from iNaturalist’s research-grade dataset, contributed and verified by a global community of naturalists under Creative Commons licensing. Because it reflects what people have actually recorded, sparse or remote areas may show fewer animals.
A scan shows nothing, or animals that seem far away.
In areas with few recorded observations, Tracks widens the search to a larger surrounding area so you still have something to discover, which is why a result may have been recorded some distance from you. If a scan comes back empty, there may simply be no research-grade observations logged nearby yet. Moving to a denser area (a park, a coast, a trailhead) usually helps.
How do I delete my account?
Open the app, go to Settings and tap Delete account. That permanently removes your account and everything tied to it: your email, profile, and collected species. It happens immediately and can’t be undone. If you can’t get into the app, email us from your account address and we’ll delete it for you.
